A Bambara state in present-day Mali centred on Ségou on the Niger River, founded by Biton Coulibaly and later conquered by the Toucouleur leader El Hadj Umar Tall.

• Mungo Park’s journey to the Niger (1795–1797 CE): The Scottish surgeon Mungo Park travelled inland from the Gambia River and in 1796 reached the Niger at Ségou, confirming that the river flows eastward.
