The Communist state in the northern Korean Peninsula, founded under Kim Il Sung and ruled by his family ever since. Its 1950 invasion of the South began the Korean War, and it has since developed nuclear weapons.

• Kim Il Sung (1912 CE – 1994 CE): Founding leader of North Korea from 1948 until his death.
• Korean Armistice Agreement (1953 CE): Armistice signed at Panmunjom ending hostilities and creating the Korean Demilitarized Zone.
• First North Korean nuclear test (2006 CE): North Korea conducted its first nuclear test at Punggye-ri.
