Germany since reunification in 1990, when the former East German states joined the Federal Republic, with Berlin restored as capital. It is the most populous member and largest economy of the European Union.

On its lands while it lasted

• Dessau (c. 1863–2007 CE): Capital of Duchy of Anhalt (1863–1870).
• Cold War (1947–1991 CE): The rivalry between the United States and the Soviet Union and their allies, fought through an arms race, proxy wars and the space race rather than direct war. Divided Berlin was its emblem; it ended with the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991.
