A French colony established in the bay of Rio de Janeiro in 1555 under Nicolas Durand de Villegaignon, which was destroyed by the Portuguese in the following decade.

On its lands while it lasted

• Rio de Janeiro (1565 CE): Founded by the Portuguese on Guanabara Bay, Rio became the capital of colonial Brazil in 1763 and of the Brazilian empire and republic until 1960.
• Caracas (1567 CE): Capital of Republic of Venezuela (1811–1814), Venezuela (1834–today).
