Communist Hungary, a Soviet satellite whose 1956 uprising was crushed by Soviet troops. Under János Kádár it adopted a relatively liberal economic model, and it became a democratic republic in 1989.

• Hungarian Revolution of 1956 (1956 CE): A nationwide revolt against Hungary's communist government and Soviet control broke out in Budapest in October 1956. Soviet forces crushed it in November.
