Khedivate of Egypt
State · 1866–1884 CE · at its largest around 1877 CE
Khedive Ismail wanted Egypt to be part of Europe, building Paris-style boulevards and an opera house in Cairo and opening the Suez Canal in 1869 with lavish celebrations. Crushing debts brought European financial control, Urabi's nationalist revolt and British occupation.
