Kingdom of Libya

A North African monarchy under King Idris I that became independent in 1951 as a federation of Tripolitania, Cyrenaica and Fezzan. Oil discoveries transformed its economy before Muammar Gaddafi overthrew the king in 1969.

• Muammar Gaddafi (c. 1942 CE – 2011 CE): Seized power in a 1969 coup and ruled Libya for 42 years until he was overthrown and killed in the 2011 civil war.
• Benghazi (c. 1953 CE): Capital of Kingdom of Libya (1953–1968).
