The final form of the Joseon state, proclaimed by King Gojong in 1897 to assert Korea's independence from Qing China. Increasingly dominated by Japan, it became a Japanese protectorate in 1905 and was annexed in 1910.

• Battle of Tsushima (1905 CE): Japan's navy destroyed Russia's Baltic Fleet.
• Japanese annexation of Korea (1910 CE): Japan annexed Korea, ruling it as a colony until 1945.
