Iraq after the US-led invasion of 2003, a federal parliamentary republic. From 2014 it fought to reclaim large areas seized by the Islamic State, which was declared territorially defeated in Iraq in 2017.

• Fall of Mosul (2014 CE): Islamic State militants captured Mosul, Iraq's second-largest city, where their leader proclaimed a caliphate; Iraqi forces retook the city in 2017.
