Baltic republic that declared independence in 1918 with Riga as its capital. Annexed by the Soviet Union in 1940, it restored independence in 1991 and later joined the EU and NATO.

• Baltic Way (1989 CE): On 23 August 1989 about two million people joined hands in a 675-km human chain across Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania to demand independence from the Soviet Union.
