A Horn of Africa state on the Red Sea that won independence from Ethiopia after a thirty-year war, confirmed by a 1993 referendum. It has been ruled by Isaias Afwerki since independence.

• Tigray War (2020–2022 CE): Armed conflict between Ethiopia's federal government, allied with Eritrea, and the Tigray People's Liberation Front, which caused mass casualties and famine conditions.
