The current Greek democracy, established after the fall of the military junta in 1974, when a referendum abolished the monarchy. Greece joined the European Communities in 1981.

- Greek government-debt crisis (2009–2018 CE): Greece faced a sovereign debt crisis from 2009, receiving three international bailouts in exchange for severe austerity. It exited the last programme in 2018.
